Faculty Information

The Goulburn Regional Conservatorium provides a broad range of Music Educational services to the regional community including specific individual instrumental tuition, group or shared classes, master classes and classes in Early Childhood Music, Musicianship, Song Writing, Composing and Arranging.

  • Early Childhood Music

    Early Childhood Music classes offer a fun and educational introduction to music for preschool aged children. The program fosters an appreciation of music and enhances development while having fun. Parents are invited to join their children in class and experience a creative, shared learning environment. Singing, dancing, playing instruments and musical games stimulate creativity, imagination and improve physical coordination and dexterity. The Early Childhood Music Program will help children develop musical understanding and a lifetime love of music.

  • Musicianship

    Musicianship is the study of the language of music in theoretical and practical terms. Music literacy is an essential component of the process of developing overall musical understanding, musical creativity and confidence in the performance of music. This study explores the elements of music including notation, rhythm, melody, form, texture, timbre, harmony and style. Students maybe enrolled in musicianship examinations or may simply follow this course to improve their understanding of music.

  • Song Writing

    The art of writing songs can be as individual as the song itself. This course will assist students to find pathways to musical self-expression through the exploration of different approaches to creative song writing. The study involves learning and understanding harmonic progressions, song structure, setting of lyrics, descriptive writing, impressionism, commercial song structures and writing for specific voice types and musical genres.

  • Composing and Arranging

    Composition is a creative art form like any other, with a clear intended outcome of self-expression. This course utilises the latest music technology programs Such as Sibelius and Musescore to assist students in exploring a wide range of compositional techniques for a range of genres and instruments. Students will also study the fundamentals of effective arranging for choirs, bands and other ensembles.

  • Voice

    The study of voice involves the development of physical coordination and understanding of technical approaches to breath management, release of physical tension, tonal focus and support. Technical skills are further enhanced through knowledge and understanding of musicianship, aural perception, genre, style and performance interpretation as appropriate. Repertoire which is suitable for the individual student is chosen and may be related to set examination programs.

  • Guitar

    The study of guitar involves the development of physical coordination including posture, finger dexterity, positioning of hands and arms and playing elements relating to style such a picking or strumming. Technical skills are further enhanced through knowledge and understanding of musicianship, aural perception, genre, style and performance interpretation as appropriate to the instrument. Repertoire which is suitable for the individual student is chosen and may be related to set examination programs.

  • Guitar Bass

    The study of the bass guitar is a crucial one as it forms the backbone of the rhythm section along with the drums. Lessons involve the learning of note values, rhythm, arpeggios, walking bass lines, proper hand, arm and wrist position, slapping and popping and tapping. Once these techniques are developed, songs are then selected to enhance these skills and move onto examination pieces and playing with other students.

  • Percussion Drums

    The study of drum kit involves many factors. Physical technique, including proper stick grip and sitting position, is important from the first lesson. Rudimentary rhythmic elements build flow, dexterity and understanding, combining over time to create complexity. Students explore how the drums are unique in their dependency upon other instruments. However, solo studies are also encouraged to provide independent performance opportunities. Students are taught ergonomics and ear protection, and they may use a variety of acoustic or electronic drum kits. Students gain confidence, enjoying constant feedback, talking about styles and trends, choosing their preferred material and having jam sessions!

  • Piano

    The study of piano involves the development of appropriate posture, hand, wrist and arm positioning and related elements of physical coordination. These skills are designed to assist the student to play with freedom and fluency across the keyboard. Technical skills are further enhanced through knowledge and understanding of musicianship, aural perception, genre, style and performance interpretation as appropriate to the instrument. Repertoire which is suitable for the individual student is chosen and may be related to set examination programs.

  • Strings Violin

    The study of violin involves the development of physical coordination including posture, finger dexterity, bowing, positioning of hands and arms and playing elements relating to style. Technical skills are further enhanced through knowledge and understanding of musicianship, aural perception, tone, genre, style and performance interpretation as appropriate to the instrument. Repertoire which is appropriate to the individual student is chosen and may be related to set examination programs.

  • Strings Cello

    The study of cello involves the development of the aural sense coupled with the kinesthetic sense and coordination, correct positioning of the body, limbs and fingers. Facility of performance is a function of all the above as well as familiarity with musical notation, aural training and musicianship. Appropriate repertoire is chosen by experienced music teachers. The A.M.E.B. Syllabus is a product of very capable and experienced teachers, and can be used to the advantage of the students.

  • Speech & Drama

    The study of speech and drama involves the development of sound ear training, body training and breathing techniques. Technical skills are further enhanced through voice studies, vowel and consonant classification and good articulation involving accuracy, distinctness, firmness, fluency and deliberation. Six facets of vocal expression are covered, as well as correction of speech faults and speaking to others. Repertoire which is appropriate to the individual student is chosen and may be related to set examination, eisteddfod and other performance programs.

  • Brass Trumpet

    The study of trumpet involves the development of correct posture for playing, breath control, embouchure, finger dexterity and physical coordination. Technical exercises are used to further improve musical understanding and facility on the instrument. Understanding of style, genre and performance techniques are gained through the selection and knowledge of suitable repertoire for each student. Students are encouraged to develop skills as a soloist and also in being part of a larger ensemble.

  • Brass Trombone

    The study of trombone involves the development of correct posture for playing, breath control and embouchure, slide dexterity and physical coordination. There is a further key aural component required in learning the trombone related to positioning of the slide and correct embouchure to create accurate pitch. Technical exercises are used to further improve musical understanding and facility on the instrument. Understanding of style, genre and performance techniques are gained through the selection and knowledge of suitable repertoire for each student. Students are encouraged to develop skills as a soloist and also in being part of a larger ensemble.

  • Woodwind Oboe

    The study of the oboe involves the development of fine motor skills and a specific embouchure suitable to the playing of a double reed woodwind instrument. For this reason it may not be the ideal starting instrument for a very young child but may suit a student who has started by learning the recorder, clarinet or flute. However, the oboe is a beautiful instrument with a unique and expressive tone. It has a key function in an orchestral context and can also be featured as a versatile solo instrument.

  • Woodwind Saxophone

    The study of saxophone involves the development of physical coordination, posture and breath management, and knowledge of many different styles of music. Students can choose to work towards examinations or learn for pleasure. Building skills and knowledge that will enable the player to perform and enjoy music both as a soloist, or member of an ensemble is central to learning saxophone.

  • Woodwind Clarinet

    The study of clarinet involves the development of physical coordination, posture and breath management, and knowledge of many different styles of music. Students can choose to work towards examinations or learn for pleasure. Building skills and knowledge that will enable the player to perform and enjoy music as both a soloist, or member of an ensemble is central to learning the clarinet.

  • Woodwind Flute

    The study of flute involves the development of appropriate posture – hand, wrist, shoulder and neck positioning, also the ongoing development of embouchure. The development of breath management and diaphragmatic support to enhance tonal production is a vital aspect of the flute technique. An understanding of tuning-pitch is ongoing and necessary to assist in orchestral and ensemble repertoire. This is appropriate to the individual student and may be related to set examination programs.

  • Woodwind Recorder

    A recorder is an excellent instrument being easy to hold, which facilitates the development of fine motor skills in both hands. Valuable skills of note recognition, rhythm patterns, note reading, and understanding music are acquired through the learning of the recorder. Building skills and knowledge will enable the player to perform and enjoy music both as a soloist, or member of an ensemble.
